I have owned this clone since 2017, I bought it on DH Gate for 109$. The knife looks very much like an original but has no Microtech name or logo anywhere. It comes in at 20.4cm overall length and weighs 97 grams.
I immediately liked the aesthetics of the design with all those exciting shapes and lines. The knife is very well made down to the smallest detail. The titanium handles are milled perfectly with great attention to detail and has what I guess to be a tumbled finish that gives great grip in all positions. The proprietary hardware is equally well made and of high quality. The Damascus insert on the pivot screw acts as the overtravel stop, the lock bar has a steel insert fitted with 2 screws. The handle is 11.2cm long. The party trick of this model is the spring-loaded pocket clip that has the clip sitting flush inside the handle with only a small button protruding to lift it out when needed. This makes it superbly comfortable to hold.
The Wharncliffe blade is marked a M390 and is flat ground, the spine is 3mm at its thickest but tapers down toward the tip before flaring into the point. It cuts and slices wonderfully and has a well thought out geometry. The edge retention is superb but sharpening takes time and effort which leads me to believe that it actually is M390. The blade has a well-positioned finger choil to choke the blade for delicate work and the flipper is a joy to use. The tab has perfect jimping, the detent is on the hard side but manageable, the blade fires lightning quick, runs super smooth on bearings and locks with authority. There is no play in any direction, the lockup is 30%.
There is much to like about this clone, the build quality, attention to detail in the finish and the looks are superb, but for over 100$ it better be!
What I don’t like is that all that milling on the handle turned out to be a dirt magnet with lint and gunk building up in there and the rough texture of the titanium takes an effort to clean it. But my major gripe is with the clip. A great idea on paper and an opportunity to showcase Microtech’ s abilities, in practical terms it is pretty much useless. Unless clipped to the thinnest of fabrics the clip will stand off from the pocket risking snagging and breaking off. I wish they had put a standard clip on this knife, it would work so much better. Considering what else is available for this kind of money I probably would not buy this one again.
