I have read a lot of good things about this knife and liked the looks of it so last year when I stumbled upon a dealer on AE selling one for 31 dollars I went for it. After receiving the Carson designed folder I became quickly convinced that this is not a fake but the original Item and when I had an opportunity to compare it with a known original I could confirm this. After all, CRKT produces this model in China. With a blade length of just under 10cm and an overall length of 23.5cm this is well into fixed blade size but with 169 grams it is still at a manageable weight.
The Handles are G10 on steel liners skeletonized for looks and weight reduction. They are put together nicely and everything lines up perfectly. The handle is very comfortable to hold and provides a very secure grip in all positions. The pocket clip can be fitted in 4 ways and is well made. Due to the knife’s size I have removed mine after a couple of months. There is no lanyard hole.
The Titanium Nitrade coated spear point blade is made of 8Cr14MoV and is hollow ground. Out of the box it is one of the sharpest blades I ever received and it has a very good edge retention. The ambidextrous thumb studs are actually the stopping pins but they protrude enough to be used for opening the knife but it is designed to open with the Carson flipper. The detent is perfect and despite its size the blade flips open very keenly with smooth action. There is no play when locked open and the blade is perfectly centered when closed. The liner lock is solid and engages early. This knife is equipped with the AutoLAWKS and this is the only, very personal gripe with this knife. This additional locking mechanism locks the liner lock. While I can appreciate the idea, in practical terms it is a pain in the butt. The lever to disengage the LAWKS sits right next to the flipper so every time you open the knife your index finger hits the jimped edge of the LAWKS and that I find really uncomfortable! Also, closing the knife needs getting used to since you have to disengage the LAWKS before you can push back the liner lock, it is all a bit too much, for me anyway.
I really like this knife, it is well made and solid, it certainly inspires confidence that you can throw pretty much anything at it and it won’t fail you. I am very happy with the edge it takes and how well it retains it and it has become a regular carry at work where it endures all kinds of use and abuse. The AutoLAWKS I can do without and as soon as I have a good reason to disassemble the knife I hope to be able to remove the mechanism and use it as a normal liner locking knife. Other than that I give it 2 thumbs up, I would buy one again!
