One of my favorite budget Chinese knife is the collaboration Meyerco Lambert Shockwave. Kirby Lambert is a custom knifemaker from Canada and the Shockwave is a copy of his custom Hooligan knife. Meyerco also collaborated with Darrell Ralph, Blackie Collins, Greg Lightfoot, Jeff Hall, Randall King, Charles Sauer and Dirk Pinkerton.
Meyerco low budget knife company of knifemaker Blackie Collins and is affiliated with custom knifemaker Darrell Ralph (DDR). I can remember that Meyerco have been around since the 80's and was the first company to come out with assisted opening designed by Blackie Collins. Meyerco is also the maker of Mossberg knives, outdoor hunting and fishing equipment. The higher end of DDR line is semi-custom knife company Hand-Tech Made (HTM).
The Shockwave is offered in assisted opening combo blade or manual opening plain edge. I am not a fan of the combo edge or assisted opening so the manual plain edge was my obvious chose.
The Shockwave is one of the few knives available with carbon fiber and G-10 handle at a low budget price. The model that is currently available is the 4 screw 2nd generation resembles the original custom Hooligan but i prefer the look of the carbon fiber on 5 screw 1st generation.
1st Gen Shockwave Custom Lambert Hooligan
2nd gen Shockwave
The specification of the Meyerco Lambert Shockwave:
Closed length - 4 5/8"
Open length - 8 1/2"
Blade steel - 8CR13
Weight - 6.40 oz
Bolster - Carbon fiber
Handle - G-10
Thumbstud - Dual
Clip - Tip-up
Warranty - Limited Forever
MSRP - $38.99 for the manual plain edge
$33.99 for the assisted combo edge
The blade has a nice wide hollow grind belly with a reverse curve edge, the custom Lambert spider logo adds a nice touch. The only jimping is an aggressive on the thumb ramp and spine of the blade is recessed. The blade was slightly off center. The handle is a smooth contoured CF and G-10 with rounded off edges that fits nicely in my hand and not too slippery. I rubbed a black wax to fill and hide the very small gap between the CF and the G-10. The steel standoffs are shaped which adds a nice touch and finished polished look to the knife. The thumb studs are tapered and stepped with rounded ball end that is easy on my thumb when flicking the blade open. The clip matches the original Lambert custom but unfortunately located on one spot of the knife with tip-up and rides a tad too high for my liking. The steel liner is thick and contoured at the finger location at 50% lockup. Some may find the 6.40 oz too heavy for EDC but I don't notice the weight in my pocket.
Pro:
- CF and G10 contoured handle
- Wide hollow grind belly blade
- Nice finishing touches
- Semi-low ride height
- Overall fit and finish quality
- Dual thumb stud for left or right hand opening
- Nice contoured standoff spacers
- Smooth opening and closing
- Price $22.95 at KC
Con:
- mild 8CR13 blade
- 6.40 weight
- Nylon washers
- No holes in the liner to reduce the weight
Can't lose with the Meyerco Lambert Shockwave for the price.
