I became aware of the original Praetorian through knife forums where this model created a lot of buzz and strong opinions. I became intrigued because i actually really liked the heavy industrial design. I got a fake one from AE for just under 23$ to see what it is all about.
This fake seems very close to the original as far as the design and the dimensions go although the all stainless steel in black stonewash is not available from the original manufacturer.
The handles are 4mm slabs and very well made, fit & finish are flawless. Despite the brutal looks, it is surprisingly comfortable to hold. The knife is 13mm thick, the nicely detailed right side tip up only pocket clip adds another 4mm. There is a glass breaker tip at the end of the handle, no lanyard hole.
The 4mm thick tanto blade is advertised as 440 steel (I guess 440A) and is hollow ground. Out of the box it was shaving sharp. The edge is not straight, there is a very slight recurve on it. It takes a very keen edge and retains it quite well. The massive blade opens very smoothly and with a little practice it can be opened with one hand using the large fuller. The frame lock engages with a reassuringly loud click. There is zero blade play and the closed blade sits perfectly centered between the scales. The massive jimping continues from the handle into the spine of the blade
but it is a little harsh to the touch.
This is a crazy knife! With an overall length of 21cm and a weight of 332 grams is ludicrously heavy and the thick blade is outperformed by any other knife in my collection when it comes to cutting stuff. I never carry it. It has little practical value, it is a toy. But it is VERY well made, looks badass, costs less than 25 dollars and it makes me smile every time I touch it. And because of that, I am about to order the G10 model as well!
