I bought the Ganzo G720 in June 2015 from Fasttech for under 22$. The knife is a copy of the Lionsteel SR-1 but with an axis lock instead of the frame lock. Having no experience with axis locks I ordered several axis locking Ganzo models to see for myself what they are like.
My first impression was WOW! How Ganzo is able to produce this kind of quality with attention to detail and flawless finish at this price is beyond me! At 204 grams it is a beefy knife but it oozes quality. The handles are 2 beautifully textured plastic slabs on stainless steel liners. The handles are put together flawlessly, everything lines up perfectly with no sharp edges or points. The 12cm handle makes for a very comfortable and secure grip in all positions. The deep carry pocket clip is tip up only, left & right side carry. The knife has a good sized lanyard hole.
The 3.8mm thick drop point blade is made of 440C steel and is flat ground. There is some very light jimping on the spine but it is very short and not grippy. The ambidextrous studs are nicely machined and very easy to operate with your thumb only, the blade opens smoothly, has no play in any direction but is a hair off center. The axis lock is a very solid locking mechanism and truly ambidextrous. The axis pin is machined just like the thumb studs and it is easy to reach for releasing the blade. The spring tension of the lock also keeps the blade firmly closed. Out of the box it was reasonably sharp, it takes a keen edge and retains it well.
I use the G720 at work for cutting materials like thick rubber and plastic hoses, rope, stripping wires, slicing open bags, scraping metal surfaces, light prying and similar tasks.
The Ganzo G720 is an amazing knife, it looks, feels and performs so great that I can almost live with the axis lock. But I can’t and that’s why I would not buy it again. But that is because of my preferences and habits and not because anything is wrong with the knife. I wouldn't buy any knife with axis lock ever again. But if you like big folders with a rock solid lock, impeccable fit & finish and great performance don’t look any further than the Ganzo G720, you won’t regret it.
