After being very happy with the Wild Boar Whaleshhark clone I decided to get that company's copy of the Socom Delta as well. There are CF and titanium handle versions avilable too but I went for this G10 version for 48$ on DH Gate. Just like the Whaleshark, this Socom copy is also a blade/handle combination that doesn't exist as an original Microtech knife and it doesn't bear the original makers name or logo.
The machined G10 is done very neatly and has just the right texture for my taste, not too smooth, not too rough and I also love the overall ergonomics of the handle in any grip. There are no steel liners, the 2 slabs of G10 are all there is making this knife remarkably light at 124 grams. Nevertheless the handle is very solid, there is no flexing in any direction and the balance is excellent.
The floating back spacer is a beautifully machined piece of blue anodized titanium, the proprietary screws and pivot are made of steel. The titanium clip lets the knife sit quite high and the titanium sub frame lock has a steel insert that also acts as an over travel stop. The handle has steel inserts for the stop pins to rest against when the blade is open which I find an impressive attention to detail for a sub 50$ knife, a flawless job on the handle!
The completely unmarked tanto blade is advertised as D2, it arrived shaving sharp and it retains the edge incredibly well. The blade is hollow ground and satin polished with a bead blasted fuller. The intricately milled thumb studs are actually the stop pins that rest against the handle when open but thew work very well for opening the knife. The detent is just simply perfect and the action is smooth and very quick, the blade moves on bearings. The lockup is solid and around 35%, there is no play in any direction. Closed the blade is a perfectly centered. The knife cuts well and with the very acute tanto tip make it a great stabber.
I have come to use and enjoy the Socom clone quite a lot over the past 12 months despite suffering from similar shortcomings like the Whaleshark. It is also a blade with a radical design and very deep fuller that has quite sharp edges making is less than ideal for cutting soft materials like foam and cardboard. But that factor aside, I still like this knife a lot, it does most of what it should without problems, is comfortable to carry, stays very sharp for a long time and I love the look & feel! I am very satisfied with the fit & finish and I would not hesitate to buy it again!
